Tomales Bay

This is one of the little beaches on Tomales Bay in Marin County, CA. It's not my usual color scheme. I was trying out something different after a demonstration in class on how to paint sand by first putting down raw sienna, then over-glazing with a mix of pale gray made with a mix of cerulean blue and vermilion. Since the sky took up three quarters of the painting, I felt it had to have some drama in it. I think this ended up being too much sky and not enough beach. Need to try it again.

  1. A beautiful scene, Jean ... and the sand is just the perfect color! I never know how to paint sand; I'm going to write down your formula!
I like your new profile too!

  3. This sky is dramatic and just right. I think the contrasting sand is really well done and I think you could nearly fill the page with sky. It would be Turner-esque, don't you think?

  5. Jean, I say you did great the first time. !! I usually do sand with a mix of raw sienna, and a little violet.. oh, now that I wrote that down I just realized , cerulean plus vermillion = violet... Duh!

  6. Thanks Laura. I'm always inspired by your self criticism on your blog.

Isabel: Thanks, but I think yo got me mixed up with Laura who had made a comment on my blog.

Melinda: Thanks for the great comment. If only I could be as good as Turner was - one of my favorite watercolorists.

Rupesh: Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement.

Barbara: Thanks so much. I will try using violet to see which gives the better result. Thanks for sharing that tip.

  12. Hi - you asked about the Painting and Drawing channel. It's a UK TV channel I'm afraid but they do show the programmes on-line. I don't know if you'll be able to access it but here's the URL - http://www.thepaintinganddrawingchannel.co.uk/tv-anytime.html

BTW, I've ordered the Linda Kemp book! x
